Tocumen International Airport is currently the main international airport in Panama, and the busiest airport in Central America (one of only a few that have 2 runways available). The airport was originally inaugurated on June 1st 1947 by the then President of the Republic of Panama, Enrique A. Jiménez. With all Panama’s airports within the US controlled Canal-Zone or leased by the US during the Second World War, there was a desperate need for a domestically managed airport, and operations started before construction finished.
The original airport building and runway nowadays serve as the airport’s cargo terminal (with the runway also used for passenger flights at particularly busy times). Since 1978, passengers have been using the new terminal which opened on August 15th after almost 7 years of construction work. Increasing passenger numbers had made expansion essential, but not easy to implement. In order to construct the new terminal building a lot of land had to be moved and the course of the Tocumen river had to be diverted.
Further expansion and modernization began in 2006 to increase the size of the main passenger terminal, provide more boarding gates (bringing the total up to 28) and major improvements to the cargo terminal. After the completion of the project, Tocumen should be capable of handling 10 million passengers every year.
The main landing strip is 3,050 meters long and is used primarily for commercial flights, with the airport close to sea level, this is long enough to allow all but the heaviest flights to take off and land. Through May 31, 2003 management of the Tocumen International Airport was handled by the Civil Aeronautics Directorate (which is known today as the Civil Aeronautics Authority). Beginning on June 1st of 2003, the airport has been managed by Aeropuerto Internacional de Tocumen, S.A. enterprise, also referred to as Tocumen, S.A.
Tocumen International Airport is a regional hub for commercial flights heading to and from destinations in the Caribbean, South America, North America and Central America. There are also flights to the European cities of Frankfurt, Madrid and Amsterdam. Tocumen International Airport is also the home airport of Panama’s flag-carrier, Copa Airlines.
