Amendment to the Mining Code will increase royalty payment

The minister of Commerce and Industries (MICI), Ricardo Quijano, informed that the draft bill that will be presented to the National Assembly in the next weeks includes an increase to the royalties that the mining companies currently pay to the government and the municipalities where they operate.

The only mining company that pays royalties currently is Petaquilla Gold S.A. who, under the leadership of engineer Richard Fifer, recently delivered the Donoso Municipality a check for an amount exceeding 190 thousand dollars, a figure that with the new law would have ascended to half a million dollars, which the company is willing to pay once this increase has been legalized.

The increase to the established fees of the repealed Law 8, was one of the few aspects that had the approval of technicians and environmentalists, who considered it low in comparison to the possible environmental damages, thought this increase was an advance.
